Online Book Club

The Online Book Club is a website where authors can promote their books. And to do so, they need people to review their work and provide feedback. This will allow potential readers to decide.

To earn cash, you need to become a member. This lets you receive books from the company in order to review. Depending on the length of the book, your experience and the book to be reviewed, you can earn anywhere between $5 to $60 per review.

That said, be aware that you won’t get paid for your first review. That’s because Online Book Club will use your performance here to see which jobs to send you.

The good news is, you’ll get paid for every job you receive after your first one.

Kirkus Media

Kirkus Media is known for its book reviews. As such, the best way you can earn extra cash with them is to become a reviewer. This job requires that you read books and are able to create meaningful reviews to help potential readers decide whether or not to get the book.

Most reviews are 350 words long. So, you need to be succinct and be able to get straight to the point because there isn’t going to be a lot of room to write.

To apply to Kirkus Media, you will need to have a resume and submit it to them. Additionally, prepare some writing samples and list down what kind of books you’re able to review. This gives them an idea of how you review and what kind of genre you’re better suited for. According to past reviewers, you get paid $50 per 350-word review.

While reviewers are their bread and butter, you’ll also see Kirkus Media hire copywriters and editors as well. That’s because it has a magazine.

The U.S. Review of Books

As its name suggests, the U.S. Review of Books reviews books. And, this gives you an opportunity to make money by becoming a reviewer for them. But, the side works a little differently than many of the others on our list.

With U.S. Review of Books, you need to visit their site regularly because that’s where they’ll post titles of books they need to be reviewed. As a member, you get to choose which ones you want to work on.

Once you’ve made your choice, you need to send in a request (more like an application) to review the book. And, it’s up to the U.S. Review of Books to select whom they’ll give the assignment to. Thus, it can get fairly competitive depending on how many people apply to review that particular publication.

The good news is, the site publishes book reviews covering many different genres. So, there’s a lot of choose from.

Each review will be between 250 to 300 words. And, its deadline for submission will be 2 to 3 weeks after you accept the job. Your review can include insights, constructive criticism, memorable quotes from the book, and summary to name a few.

You’ll be paid on a monthly basis.

Women’s Review of Books

The Wellesley Centers for Women has been publishing the magazine Women’s Review of Books for the last 35 years. The company is a collaboration between Wellesley College and publishing firm Old City Publishing.

As with U.S. Review of Books, it’s is distinct from the others on the list because it focuses mainly on books written by women about women. This makes its topic narrower than some of the other companies. Thus, you have a good idea of what you expect. Although the topics covered by the titles can vary significantly.

Another thing that differentiates it from the others is that you need to pick the book you want to publish. WRB magazine doesn’t have a list of books to choose from. Instead, you’ll pick a publication and pitch it to them for review.

To do so you need to email them with your resume, cover letter, and samples of published reviews. They will then evaluate your application as it comes in. And, you’ll receive an acceptance confirmation if they decide to go through with your pitch.

As for payment, you’ll receive a free subscription of their magazine and get paid 14 cents per word which is the ongoing rate for senior reviewers. In some cases, they also pay $100 per review.

Any Subject Books

Any Subject Books reviews books from lots of different genres. This gives you more opportunities as a reviewer since you can have multiple interests you can work with.

But, before doing so, you’ll need to apply to become a book reviewer for Any Subject Books. Once, you’re accepted, they’ll send you book titles for review. Along with it, they also include its synopsis. They do this so that you can decide whether or not to accept or decline that particular job.

This is a nice feature because while they do match your genre preferences with the new titles that they want to have reviewed, a particular title may not always be interesting to you. This way, you know what the publication is about and can decide if it’s something you wish to do.

Payment is on a book to book basis. As such, it varies depending on the genre, length, and other factors.

Jobs That Pay You to Read Books

Most of the time, being a reviewer is the best way to get paid to read books. It’s quick and all you need to do is apply to the right places. However, it’s not the only way where you can make money by reading.

Here are some of the most popular jobs where you can put your love for reading to good use and make money in the process.

Narrate Audiobooks

Audiobooks have become a big thing in the past decade or so because people are always in a hurry. Thus, like podcasts, you only need your phone or tablet and a set of headphones to get through these books and learn something.

This makes audio narration a good job if you have a great voice and know how to intonate. In some cases, like children’s books, being able to do different voices helps a lot. It’s worth noting that many audiobook narrators need to do their own editing as well.

The good news is being a book narrator pays very well. You can make between $100 to $300 an hour dong so.

Copyediting

Copyediting is one of the more traditional jobs you’ll see in both major and minor publishers. Additionally, almost any kind of print or content publication will have some kind of copyediting job available. This means you can work for publishing houses, media companies, and even magazines.

While it won’t pay as well as audiobook narration, you’ll still have a fairly lucrative job, as copyediting pays between $25 to $35 an hour.

In order to become a copy editor, you’ll often need some kind of degree or certification. This ensures that you know the basics of sentence structure, flow, and other parameters of writing. Your goal as a copy editor is to focus on the accuracy of the piece, formatting, and do some proofreading as well.

Become an Editor

In contrast to copyediting (which is a more general and higher level of editing), an editor makes all the detailed changes needed.

In general, you’ll be making much more changes to a piece of content compared to what the copy editor will do. Here, you may revise, rewrite, re-organize an article to make the message clear. The overall goal here is to create clarity so the piece is easy to read, has proper sentence construction, the right tone, and everything makes sense while delivering what the author intends to say.

Like a copy editor, pay runs between $25 to $35 an hour.

Proofreader

A proofreader can overlap with an editor. In fact, many jobs entail both editing and proofreading. However, many also separate the two for good reason.

Proofreading mainly focuses on fixing spelling errors, punctuation, numbers, letters, and consistency within a piece of content.

Thus, it’s more “mechanical” compared to editing as you’re really proofreading the content to make sure there are no mistakes. Technically, it doesn’t involve rearranging sentence structure or moving paragraphs up or down to make the piece read better or sound better.

Freelance Manuscript Reader

A freelance manuscript reader gets paid to read all sorts of material ranging from unpublished manuscripts to online content. And, like a freelance writer, you get paid handsomely to do so.

In most cases, you can earn between $25 to $100 per hour. Although, a lot depends on who hires you, your experience, and what you’re asked to read.

A lot of material often comes from literary agents. The reason being that publication companies and agencies receive tons of manuscripts. And, because hiring lots of in house readers can balloon their payroll, they often farm out the work to freelance readers.

That’s where you come in. Basically, upon receiving a manuscript, you’ll read it and produce a 2-3 page report about it. Just as importantly, you’ll form a recommendation on whether the agency you take or pass on the project.

Book Layout & Design

People do judge books by their covers. That’s why the best written short stories, novels, and texts all have beautiful covers. In addition, everything is laid out in an organized and easy to read manner.

For children’s books or those that include quite a lot of photos or images like recipe books, for example, there’s extra work in arranging and re-arranging these images so that they flow well with the content. All that falls under layout and design.

As a book designer, you won’t be involved with the content part. But, in order to design the cover and organize the content, you’ll need to read the book as well. From there, you’ll be using software like Microsoft Publisher or Adobe InDesign to structure the paragraphs, position the photos or illustrations and make sure that everything is easy for the reader to find and go through.

Publisher

As a publisher, you combine all the skillsets above, from writing to editing to layout and design. The purpose of this is to create one finished book to put out to market.

Thanks to Amazon Kindle, many authors have been able to self-publish their work. However, being a publisher allows you to do more. In addition to being able to create your own book from scratch, you can fund authors to write books for you.

Here, you evolve from being the creative mind of writer and move into producing an entire piece of work from scratch. And in doing so, if the books you publish do well, you’ll be able to make more money than writing.

Conclusion

Getting paid to read books is a dream job if you’re a bookworm. The good news is, there are now lots of ways to actually do so. And, in many cases, you’ll be able to choose which genres or topics you’ll be reading about.
